The Epidemic:
Grades 6-12
This lab creates an epidemic situation. One student in the lab
will be ãinfectedä with a microorgamism, which is spread through handshaking.
Each student will shake hands with a limited number of students and keep
track of each contact. Each student will determine if they have contracted
the disease by observing growth of the bacteria on a petri dish.
Students will then determine who initiated the epidemic.

their throats.

Determining the Amount of Bacteria in Food:
Grades 6-12
Students will use samples of raw ground beef to determine the amount
of bacteria found in this food.

Disinfection:
Grades 6-12
Students will determine the effectiveness of hand washing, using various
types of antibacterial soaps, in preventing the
spread of microorganisms. Students will also detemine the effectiveness
of surface disinfectants.

that grow on common surfaces.
